The sheriff who was one of the lead investigators in the murder of Navy SEAL Chris Kyle was found dead in his home late Monday night.
Tommy Bryant, the Sheriff of Texas’s Erath County, was reportedly found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to local officials.
In 2013, Chris Kyle and his best friend, Chad Littlefield, were killed at a shooting range by Eddie Ray Routh, a former Marine corporal.
Kyle and Littlefield were apparently attempting to help Routh with what his family believed to be Post Traumatic Stress Disorder by spending an afternoon on a gun range.
An investigation determined that Kyle became aware that Routh was extremely troubled on the day he was killed. Kyle secretly texted Littlefield, while sitting next to him in a pickup on the way to the range, to say Routh was “straight up nuts,” according to CNN.
While sitting in the back of the police car after being arrested, Routh told an officer “I’ve been so paranoid-schizophrenic all day, I don’t know what to even think of the world right now.”
“I don’t know if I’m insane. Or sane. I don’t know what’s even sane in the world right now,” he said.
Despite Routh’s attorneys arguing he suffered from psychosis, paranoia and schizophrenia, he was found guilty of capital murder. He was immediately sentenced to life in prison.
Bryant’s death comes less than one week after news broke that he was under investigation by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement for allegedly cheating on his continuing education training, according to the Stephenville Empire-Tribune.
The investigation reportedly began when a former sheriff’s deputy disclosed on an application with the Stephenville Police Department that he had completed Bryant’s training while he worked at the sheriff’s office.
He is survived by his wife Donnie and son Thom Allen.
